Practical guide

When to call an electrician

Plain-English prompts for deciding what information to share when an electrical problem appears.

If power is tripping, a fitting is damaged or something smells hot, describe the visible change and which areas are affected. Do not open equipment or attempt repairs.

Keep the first enquiry useful

Explain whether the issue is ongoing, intermittent or connected with a recent appliance or renovation. This helps the provider ask the right follow-up questions.

Confirm the details before work

If there is immediate danger from electricity, smoke or fire, use the appropriate emergency service. An online enquiry is not an emergency response.
